Introduction

This page provides a primer on what information you will find on this site.

A few notes before you begin:

Some of the photos have larger versions, use the "Click here to see enlargement" link to view them.
Many photos will have a figure or photograph number on it, these are featured in our book,
The Spiro Mound: A Photo Essay
, some of the captions may refer to other photos in the book.
Some pictures may have footnotes, and a few captions have been edited from the versions in the book.

A little history

This project began in 2000, when Dr. Bell showed us a box of photographs from his visits to the Spiro Mound.
A few of these had been published in various books over the years, but the majority had never been seen.
We wanted to help preserve these photos so, he allowed us to borrow them and make scans.
We quickly discovered that other people were interested in seeing these photos and learning more about them so,
we decided that these photographs and the information about them needed to be recorded.
4 years and 400 pages later, we published our book.

About this site

Following the links at left:

History of the site- features the first article we wrote on the Spiro Mounds.
It has a basic description of how the Spiro Mound evolved over time,
along with several illustrations of the stages of developement.

Excavations- has several photos from the excavations,
both the commerical dig as well as the WPA work,
there is also a timeline of events.

References- Has a link to the website were our book is available,
it also has links to other webpages with information about The Spiro Mound.
There is a selected bibliography, and a biography section on the people that are mentioned on this site.

Lastly, there is the Spiro Mound Artifact Database.
This is an ongoing project, we are collecting photographs of the excavations and artifacts from Spiro.
Right now it is just getting started, I hope to have many people contribute to this project in the future.

Please contact me with any questions or comments,
I would like this site to be a great educational resource, and I need your help to make it better.

Any photos or information you would like to contribute to the database would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for visiting, I hope you enjoy the site,
Chris Merriam
